I must be missing a large chunk of documantation somewhere, because I keep getting thwarted on the most basic issues...

How do I allow registered users to post to the default forum module without granting them admin-level authority over the module?  Variations of this issue rise in regards to Documents, Links, and Blogs, so I think I'm missing out on a fundamental resource.  What I can find is either extremely basic ("Registered Users are users that are registered with your site.") or extremely advanced (random assortment of verbs and three letter acronyms).

I'm also unable to point the home page to the virtual DNN directory... I feel like such a noob. :(

FWIW, the site is through GoDaddy and their DNN, and it's currently set up on ASP.NET 1.1, with the virtual directory set to sitename.com/dnn/.  It seemed "the thing to do" at the time...

Thanks for whatever assistance you may lend,

Woody the Easily Frustrated

Update: I had the html redirect working at the time; just had to flush the cache.

As for those user permissions... any ideas out there?  Please?

The quest continues...  I've updated the ASP.NET runtime version to 2.0; it seems to work.  As mentioned earlier, I've also gotten the domain name to forward to the virtual folder/default.aspx page.

I also discovered the Files and Folders management tool.  I suspect this is where all the permissions work takes place.  Is there some sort of front-end or control panel that controls individual file behavior such that (for instance) registered users can add files, admins or the file creator to delete/modify files, and unregistered users can view filenames?  And all without manual intervention?

Thanks,

Woody

I guess I'll keep replying to my own posts, since on the weekend it apparently takes about a day to get posts approved, which sends my post to the third or fourth page of the forum.  (Feel free to consider that constructive criticism, not a rant or whine.)

OK, I'm still hunting documentation on how to set up the website such that users can edit their own forum posts, but can't edit everything in the module.  Ditto for files, pictures, etc.  I really don't want to moderate everything on the website.  I'm guessing there's a database involved somewhere, so that will be the focus of my search.

Once again, any assistance to this web-noob is tremendously appreciated.  I do computer support for a living; permissions are nothing new, but finding where they're controlled is apparently my weak suite.

Once I've got the learning curve under way, I will be setting up a number of sites, some vanity, some private, some public.  I'd love to run them all on GoDaddy.com with DNN, but I've got to get at least one up and running first.

W00t-w00t!

Some success on the forum front.  It turns out I was testing with an account I had promoted to Admin, and forgotten to demote.  OK, the forum question is answered, as the module is self-regulating.  Coolness.

Which leaves the user permission question for files.  I'd like a respository or files page, where registered users can post files, but only Admins can remove/change them.  If the registered user could remove/change their own files, that'd be great, too.  Should I go with the Documents module or the Repository, or something else?
