I was with GoDaddy and had them install DNN.  As indicated you cannot get to the DB or the virtual directory.  Even if they do backups, the tech support told me they could only give me one copy at no charge.  They also stated (from more than on tech) that they CANNOT give you a copy of your virtual directory.  Since a lot of data is stored there, that is a serious limitation.  I also tried to install it myself and still continued to run into permissions problems (I had set the correct permissions on the virtual directory).  I have since moved to a new hosting service.  I would not recommend GoDaddy and feel they should not advertise they support DNN...

Unfortunately Godaddy does not allow access to the SQL database remotely due to the security setup.  You can install manually though to the root using the directions at http://www.northernstarsolutions.com/Troubleshooting/GodaddyHosting/tabid/61/Default.aspx, which are not too hard to follow.  The only draw back then is still the no access to the SQL database using something like Enterprise Manager.

I dumped GoDaddy for this very reason - GoDaddy does not backup your site each night.  The 2 DNN modules that claim to do backups really don't work under al circumstances (bought both).  If you want to read about what I did, check the link: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/104293/scope/posts/Default.aspx

The new hosting provider is just as cheap, one year ago, when I started with GoDaddy the other providers where 3 times as expensive - thanks GoDaddy for adding competition and the lower prices.  I had no other complaints with GoDaddy and stuck with them for 1 year - never went down.  GoDaddy just refuses to backup your site each night.  The new provider makes a complete backup of the SQL and your files each night.

Additionally, the 30 seconds it took GoDaddy to load a new page now takes 3 seconds on the new provider - every page is like that - 3 seconds to load.

Good luck to all.

I use godaddy.  you have to set up a directory under the content manager to install it.  this allows you to create a content root.

about backups...they pretty much suk on godaddy.  if you ever need them to restore for you, they charge you $150 and you have to wait 7 to 10 days.  seems crazy these days.  it's like they put the backup tape on a cart with a mule pulling it to get the tape back to their datacenter.  nutz considering how cheap backup disks are now...I don't use tapes at the office anymore...backup to disk and save time and money....but godaddy has their thing.

I don't use the dotnetnuke setup they offer as you cannot access your directory.  setting up on godaddy is pretty simple...create a directory, assign it as a content root and give it write access.  upload your files.  create an sql database.  modify your web.config to use the proper database, userid and password.  access your site and the install runs.

I think the site is a bit slow on godaddy.  it would be nice to know what other providers are available so I can increase speed.  perry said he had a company loading pages in 3 sec.  I would like to know who.

The only other problem is when hosting multiple sites on one dnn install.  i have yet to find a host offering the specific set of features i need for $10 per month or less.  Of course i need .net2, but i also would like to be able to tie unlimited domains to the site...with the ability to make an email address under whatever domain I want.  either a hosting company wants to charge for the additional domain or they want to charge for the additional email config.

The real good thing about godaddy is they are up all the time.  I have not noticed problems with the sites being offline due to godaddys fault.

www.ihostasp.net

Just went thru my site - slowest page was 3 seconds, most less than 1 second - this is about 10X - 50X faster than the EXACT same site on GoDaddy.
