The second set of connection strings are not for Windows integrated security. I found the correct term for it - it is for a SQL Express only feature called "XCopy Deployment". See here and here for more info.

The first set of connection strings are the ones to use for regular SQL Server OR if using a database with SQL Express in regular SQL Server mode ie. not with XCopy Deployment.

I am not exactly sure why your DNN ceased to function when you first attached it in the studio, and why it now is working while still being attached in the studio. What I am sure about is that there are two fundamentally different ways that SQL Express can use a database, and I think you are getting caught out by some limitations in the XCopy Deployment mode.
