I used to have a FrontPage subweb called, for example http://root.com/special, where Special was a folder under the root. Not with the strange (to me) URLs that DNN uses, I want to port a site over and have the old URL for that subweb, point to a page on my new portal.

I don't understand the friendly URL stuff yet. Sorry.

TIA.

AFAIK this cannot be done by URL rewriting, as URL rules will apply to specific file types only. I suggest to create a subweb "xxx", this creates a subfolder "xxx" as well. copy the subfolder into a  folder "special" and adopt the redirecting link in the default.aspx according to your needs. you can than delete safely the xxx subweb again.

I ran into something similar to that last week. One of our staff wanted a page on the site but felt that the full URL was going to be too long when it was put on pamphlets. What I did was create a virtual dir in IIS and used IIS's redirect option to point it to the correct page. If you go to http://www.bus.nait.ca/online it gets redirected to http://www.bus.nait.ca/main/Home/OnlineCourses/tabid/60/Default.aspx.

We did this a bit different.  We created a custom error page in classic asp and redirected the 404’s to that in IIS. The custom asp read the dnn database to read from the list that tells what requests will go to which pages. That way the redirection can be defined inside of DNN from the host menu.

I was afraid I would need to do a redirect. I wish there was a more elegant way to do this. I would be satisfied with being able to hit just the top level menu pages with a simple URL.
