I just upgraded our site to use the new 4.4.0 from 4.3 and it seemed to have broken the ability to change or use custom skins and containers for the admin tools.

The dropdownlist on the host settings page shows my custom skins as the selected skin and container, but that skin and container is not used. Also, if I try and change the skin or container and click update... nothing seems to happen and the skins/container selected is back to what it was before clicking update.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Ouch.  Actually, yes... I can validate this problem.  And it is now logged:

A workaround is to manually add the skins and containers directly in the Skins table with NULL as PortalId.

Could you clarify:  Does this mean that you can't change the Admin skin but that if it was already set to a custom skin prior to the upgrade, it will remain on that skin?

Thanks!

The settings show my custom skin is selected, but the application is using the default skin. I am also unable to change this setting through the UI.

I am unsure the workaround will work either, since the database has my custom skin as the setting already.
