I agree with others here, the current CSS standards and how they are implemented between browsers do not provide a flexible enough model for dynamic content skins.  For a week or so, I worked on a tableless skin and it worked fine, except when you would enter any oversized content with can happen if you ever let a user enter anything that is not checked to see if it is out-of-bounds.  As an example, if you use a long string of text without any breaking characters, it will, either pop your div out of place (wrap the div or some other appearance) or it will crop the content and not display the overflow.

While tables have been on the dangerous list for a few years now, there is no real replacement for them when it comes to overflowing content that has any structure.  Tables are flexible and elastic, allowing your overflowing content to expand its parent to include the oversized content.  This can still cause an ugly appearance if you do not plan for it, but at least you "can" plan for it.  Fixed width skins would be best to be designed to expand with overflowing content.

This is not just a DNN issue, it is an issue with any site that allows the possibility of overflowing content.

Anyway, that is my $03.5 cents worth from the trenches.

I'm glad to see others are looking into this as well. My current attempt is posted to one of my test sites. You are welcome to take a look at the skin, although it's not yet complete.

Hello jreivers

I have created a pure CSS skin so far it seems to work in most browsers, (unless someone can tell me different) see here:

http://www.drivewaydesign.eu/   I have managed to align panes using percentages and floats.

In my css I have a right and a left float, which I can just pop in to any div, etc.

.floatLeft {  float: left;}
.floatRight {  float: right;}

I also have a selection of width classses, as percentages  (with a little give) in various  width% combinations e.g.

.width75 {  width: 74%;}

.width50 {  width: 49.7%;}

.width25 {  width: 24.7%;}

So that I can just pop in and change the alignments as I please, providing the combined total widths do not exceed  100%

<div class="cobblestones floatLeft width25">

<div runat="server" id="drivewayLeft" />

</div>

<div class="driveway-content floatRight width75 ">

<div runat="server" id="ContentPane" ></div>

I have found that this is quite flexible, and it seems to work for me, so far without any alignment problems.

I hope that is of some use to you.

Lynn

Sam, it looks great in FF. When I look at the skin in IE6, I guess you have a box model problem (although I did not investigate it thoroughly).

Happy hunting ;)
