A client is requesting I use DotNetNuke to create their website.  I've been playing with the demo, and I understand most of the functionality.  I just can't figure out how to edit the look of it.  I'm a web designer, so I know html/css, but I can't find the files necessary.  I'm wondering if I have to actually download the DNN files and pull the skins from there?  Thanks

Can a custom skin be used with the online demo?

Greetings Mike.  The http://demo.dotnetnuke.com site only provides Admin level access and has some limitations to admin capability for security reasons (the Host can restrict the uploading of skins by Admins).  Skin uploads do present a potential  security risk (which is why Admin is role which requires trust).  In the demo scenario, where we "blindly" give Admin access, this particular feature has to be limited to ensure protection for the site.

You should be able to easily install a local instance of DotNetNuke and there is plenty of support around here to help you with that.  You'll be able to have full control and better understand ALL of DotNetNuke's features then.

Cheers

You can download DNN and install it on a windows XP computer. Don't know about installing skins in the online demo.

You need to create a skin, here you can download the documentation:  http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/125/default.aspx

Thanks Scott and Peter,  I knew there had to be skinning documentation somewhere!  Unfortunately I'm on a Mac, so I can't test it locally.  Quickly looking at the skinning doc, I noticed that tables are used for layout.  This is definitely "old school" wih divs being the best way to layout a website.  I was wondering if this was a requirement to use tables, and if not, is there any drawbacks to using divs?  Thanks!

I agree, tables are old school (at everybody reading this.... please don't start the tables / css / div discussion again...)

There are no drawbacks for divs in DNN skinning (not more then for a normal HTML page), have a look here for examples
