 - I'd like to add the parent container to the skin directly as markup and have the pane within the container markup, but then I'd have to reference the container.css file for that container from the skin. Not something I'd really like to do.

Why don't you just copy the CSS from the container and include it in skin.css? If it becomes part of the skin it should be in skin.css (or skinname.css)?

I was originally going to do this as its the simplest solution, but I didnt like it for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I'd have two chunks of CSS/markup essentially doing the same thing. Its only a container but I will be linking several container stylesheets to provide browser-specific fixes, so I'd like to not duplicate the code as this makes maintentance a bit of a headache.

Also, Im guessing that the user would end up downloading two copies of the images used in the container as the images/css appear in two places. This adds unnecessary kilobytes to user.

I just wanted if anyone else had dealt with a similar issue and how they would handle it. The suggestions have been very good and I think I have enough to deal with this one way or another,

Thanks!

- The module wrappers for sale, thanks for that. I was trying to search for various things like "Module Parent" "Child Module in module" but module wrapper is the correct search term. Im going to investigate this more as it looks interesting. Id also be interested in writing one as I'd like to get into module development. Where could I start? (ie: how can I inject a content pane within an ascx control?)

- Finally, I didnt realise that the announcements module had header/footer. This may just work in this case as that's all they need. For more complex scenarios I appreciate the other ideas - I will bear them in mind.

All modules have that header and footer section.. it's quite handy at times.

For wrapping modules, I use and can recommend the ZLDNN Module Wrapper. It has plenty of options including css per cell, auto-scrolling, and can even inject modules from other portals - that's the bit I use a lot.
