Hi mikevdm,

Thank you for the resources, examples and help.
Not coming from a coding background, can you help in advising in simple basic terms please?
Sorry... (those references are good for coders, I'm struggling to understand... )

I have 5 files:
1. index.ascx
2. menu.css
3. skin.css
4. layout.css
5. ie6.css (convert from layout.css for the IE6 gif version - where all the pngs images are derived from)

I've pasted your code:

<dnn:STYLES runat="server" id="StylesIE6"  Name="IE6Minus"
     StyleSheet="ie6.css" Condition="LT IE 7" UseSkinPath="true" />

at the bottom of index.ascx file.

Is there any extra javascript/coding that is needed at the top to get this to work?

Thanking you in advance.

No, no Javascript is needed for this, but, in order to use the dnn:Styles control, it has to be registered in the skin file. So, somewhere at the top of your skin.ascx, you would add this:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" TagName="STYLES" Src="~/Admin/Skins/Styles.ascx" %>

For info about skinning in general, these links may be useful, too:

As long as the images don't contian too much colors PNG8 is the best option.

http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2007/09/18/png8-the-clear-winner/

It is good in all normal browsers and ok in IE 6 + you don't need any hacks

But you do need Fireworks (or another 3rd party program) to create them, Photoshop  cannot.

(you need a PNG8 with alpha transparency)

Nice article find, Timo!  That's the first I'd heard of that particular twist on PNG files.  I also have an old copy of Fireworks around somewhere....I need to dig it up and see if it is at least version 3...

Thanks for sharing the link!
