That's a pretty cool trick Lee.
You are taking advantage of the fact that the skin pane will not be rendered if there are not any modules in it.

As long as no one drops any modules in that pane then that will work too.

Hi All,

I also use this technique which is a bit easier to remember:

[MENU]

This will just show the menu when you are logged in as host / admin.

Thanks,

Lee

What exactly about this makes it only visible for admins?

It's a trick with the SkinPane.  Setting it to Visible=false means that nothing will be rendered that is inside it.

Since Admin's need to be able to see all content, DNN make all panes visible and it gets rendered (it will also be visible to anyone with edit rights on the page).

i recently created a website for a local Boy & Girls Club using John Mitchells idea.  it render's the menu only when someone is logged in and only on the homepage.

<script runat="server">
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
    If DotNetNuke.Security.PortalSecurity.IsInRole("Registered Users") Then
            dnnMenu.Visible=true
    Else
            dnnMenu.Visible=false
    End If
End Sub
</script
Can the code sample above be modified so that when the (iconbar) control panel is visible a second menu instance is generated? To reduce overhead I want to make sure that second menu is only generated when the user has the appropriate rights, not just hidden in case the user isn't logged in/doesn't have admin page permissions.

Thanks in advance,

Rutger
