I would like to know what kind of encryption does DNN 4.3.5 use to encrypted the host password. I have tried to encrypted it with MD5 to check the password but it fails...

Please advice.

Thank you

by default we use 3DES (this is set in the web.config, but can be changed)

My scenario is like this, if i enter a password string, i encrypt it with 3des and compare with the one in dnn database to check the login.

I would like to ask if vb.net has any functions for doing 3des encryption?

Thank you.

I wrote something like this

    Private Function Encrypt(ByVal pass As String) As String
        Try
            Dim bt() As Byte = (New System.Text.UnicodeEncoding()).GetBytes(pass)
            Dim pdb As PasswordDeriveBytes = New PasswordDeriveBytes(pass, Nothing)
            Dim key() As Byte = pdb.GetBytes(24)
            Dim iv() As Byte = pdb.GetBytes(8)
            Dim ms As MemoryStream = New MemoryStream()
            Dim tdesc As TripleDESCryptoServiceProvider = New TripleDESCryptoServiceProvider()
            Dim cs As CryptoStream = New CryptoStream(ms, tdesc.CreateEncryptor(key, iv), CryptoStreamMode.Write)
            cs.Write(bt, 0, bt.Length)
            cs.FlushFinalBlock()
            Return Convert.ToBase64String(ms.ToArray())
        Catch ex As Exception
            Throw ex
        End Try
    End Function

but i found that the generated key is different to the saved password encrypted key.

Please help.

Thank you.

If I recall correctly - the encryption scheme use a unique KEY that is stored in the web.config

So to match the encryption scheme used to encode a password - you would need to use the same KEY that is used by DNN
