I have struggled with this as well. Is the DNN data access architechture really worth the amount of labor? I use a mixture of both conventional data access and DNN DAL, depending on the project. I do like having a seperate data access layer, even if it means more work. I haven't bothered doing any tests to see performance gained by using the DAL, but I imagine there is some trade offs: Idatareader, CBO etc...

I understand your concerns. Why would you want to use the DotNetNuke Framework if it causes you MORE work? This is why the Core and others have worked so hard to alleviate this situation:
