Hello everybody,

I'm creating a DotNetNuke module in C#. In the view user control I display a list of item, and I'd like that when a user click on a button "Show details" a new user control is opened, in which I'll display the details for the item. So, the question is:

after I've created the new user control, how can I link to it? And how can I pass the information about the ItemId of the element between the two controls?

You can pass information between two modules using IMC.  Depending on what you really need to do, that may be overkill, though.  If all you're doing is showing details, wouldn't it be easier to just have details panel within the regular view control and show/hide appropriately?

Thanks for the very fast response professorcw1.

The details panel is a good idea, but unfortunately I have to show details in a separeted user control. I don't need to pass information between modules, I've only one module. All I want is this:

when a user click the button "Show details" of one of the item displayed in the datalist (in the view user control), the details user control is called and the details of the item are displayed. So I need to know:

  • How to call the details control (is something like Response.Redirect(DetailsUrl()); ,where Details is the Key of the user control?)
  • How to pass to the details user control the itemId

Can you help me please?

I hope to have been clear, my English is not very good!

I see.  Well you have two things you need to do.

1.  Call the details control.  You can do this using:

Response.Redirect(NavigateURL("ControlKeyName"))

 2. Pass the itemid.

For this part you have a few options.  The two most popular are to use IMC (lots of sample available if you search) or you can use a QueryString variable.

There are surely more elegant ways to do it, but this is probably the easiest to implement.

Michael Washington has created a nice tutorial on the use of NavigateUrl, etc. at http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/NavigateURL/
