As I'm moving my company intranet from plain ASP.NET to DNN, I need some information on how to convert web apps within the current intranet (they access their own databases) to DNN modules.

If anyone knows where this info might exist, I'd be very happy to hear from you.

Thanks

Mike

It depends on how complex the web application is and what the goals of the migration are.

Simpe Web pages can often be converted to DotNetNuke modules quite easily. You simply convert the page into a user control and change the inherits to portalmodulebase class. You have to watch out for things like redirects to other pages and things affected by DNN's URL structure, etc.

But the bigger question is how do you plan to utilize the DNN framework ? How will you create pages, and handle sign on and roles/security, etc.

For the Data Access Layer, if this is an internal application, then I would continue to use the existing databases and DAL that you have in place. If you are looking to migrate to a new DAL, then check out SubSonic, it is a good fit and provides a lot of LINQ like expresssiveness and does not need .net 3.5

Good Luck

I'm a newbie in DotNetNuke.

I want to understand the highlighted part.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Mike:

The person who responded with the suggestion to use Subsonic as the data access layer is dead on correct. I have adopted it for all of my development, it makes data access a breeze!

I have converted numerous monolithic applications to DNN modules, and would be interested in discussing with you how I might get you started on your project. If you are interested, please feel free to contact me off of my web site.

Speaking of module development, I am soon to release my first commercial module under my own name (the Yand Soft Commerce module was my original work , you can find on snowcovered.com ... the guy who commercialized it did so without my permission, we agreed to split the proceeds, and did so until the week after my daughter's death where he cut me off the commission schedule... I didn't have the energy to fight it then so I am no longer associated with the module, but it is my work). Getting back to my soon to be released module, it is a full-featured Silverlight Powered Photo Album module, which uses SubSonic for it's DAL, and a full featured Silverlight album viewer. I will be selling it on both http://marketplace.dotnetnuke.com and www.snowcovered.com, and a demonstration of the module can be found at http://host.aciasoftware.com/ACIAGalleryModule/tabid/101/Default.aspx
