…so why don’t some of you lucky people get together using these free tools and contribute to this Open Source project by documenting the installation procedures and development environment setup for DotNetNuke?

You make some very good points.

Except that I've volunteered to help repeatedly and I've never even gotten an acknowledgement of that fact, much less been allowed to contribute.

It's not like I don't know how to write documentation and code.  I've published one book (which was a reference manual/how to for a software product) that got 5 star ratings on Amazon.com, and have published dozens and dozens of articles and conference papers.  I've even served as the editor for an international technical journal and as a contributing editor for several more.

I'm a darn good software developer, too.  :)

Why don't I just write the documentation anyway?

Well, I took the time to read their notes on contributing.

They won't take work product from you unless you sign a document relinquishing rights to the work, but they don't make the document available on the site (that I can find, anyway).  So I can't even sign the document, do the changes, and email them in.

And I sure won't take the time to write it if I can't even get someone to respond.

If and when someone on the team gets around to contacting me, I'll be glad to volunteer my time and expertise.

I'd be interested to know where/who you volunteered your efforts to - i know some of the project teams would have been happy to consider additional members. Please let me know so I can chase down the details.

With regards signing the various agreements, legally we need to have signed copies, so the correspondance is handled by fax/letter, not electronically, hence no form on the website. It's not so much that you are relinquishing your work, it's a measure in place to ensure that any work you contribute you certify as your own, at which point it becomes legally part of dotnetnuke. This protects the project from situations such as the SCO linux case , as it devolves responsibility to the contributor rather than the project (if you search about you'll find that any reasonably sized opensource project adopts similar measures). We can accept small amounts of code eg. bug fixes, but for anything non trivial we must adopt this stance to protect the community at large.

DotNetNuke also works on a meritocratic basis, with members of the community being invited to join the team based on their history of community contributions. Most of the current coreteam created modules, skins, documentation etc. and hosted them on their personal websites, which brought them to the attention of Shaun and the board. This would be an avenue I'd recommend you consider, as when we assess whether or not to accept someone onto a project team or the core itself, without some evidence of existing contribution it's difficult to assess the person fairly.

Sorry David, I've just realised where I saw your name before. I passed your details onto Shaun at one point about your offer to help with 508 compliance. He told me he emailed you and never heard back. If you'd like to contact me again I'd be very interested in this as I am working on accessibility/compliance for the next but one release - cathal.connolly(at)dotnetnuke.com

We need people like you on the DotNetNuke team.

I was composing a related riposte when I saw Cathal's reply.

Consider yourself noticed.

Will do so.

I'm glad to know that Shaun did email me, but I didn't recieve it. :(
That certainly takes away the annoyance.  Sorry for venting. :)

Will contact you shortly.
