Well if you see carefully, my approach is not about supporting or developing modules with the current DNN module architecture guidance. It's more about setting up the enviroment.. how you develop modules is a part of a different story... that said, the data provider configuration should be a part of another article.

As for deployment project... you can't compare it to Publish site, because this allows you a different level of control over your build process, and in the mix of allows you to package your modules, copy them to central repository and manage versioning and assembly information from one place. Most of these thing you can not do with Publish site, and especially you cannot do them at build time.
