Rob,

My opinion is that you should hold the site owner responsible, not a developer that is trying to fill a need.

It's like saying "You made a really ugly skin, you should not be selling that because I may have to go to someone elses site and see it".

Thanks John,

I agree that ultimately, the site owner will "reap what they sow" - if their practices chase users away, then they have to deal with it how they see fit.

However, I don't agree with your analogy.  I don't believe anyone has been motivated (yet!) to build an "ugly skin/site" blocker! (LOL!)  My point is, that pop-up ads is a little more serious an issue than an ugly skin.  The abuse of pop-ups can be extremely intrusive.  So I'm wondering why we're building ones that can't be blocked - and distributing them - here.

So, I can read into your reply that you have no problems with pop-ups that can't be blocked?  What if everyone was using such a tool?  Would that be ok too?

Just curious if this is a matter of "scope" - or of principle...

Cheers!

The "can't be blocked by pop-up ad blockers" part is just good marketing on Chris's part.  It's not really a "pop-up" in the traditional sense.  It actually produces a web page with content designed in a way that the "ad" floats above the rest of the content.

This could be useful for a number of things including replacing modal a lerts, which are also considered bad web design.

Just my perception, but I think your real objection is to how it is marketed which in turn leads to who he is marketing to.

Maybe some wording like this would better suit you:

Do you find pop-up ads offensive?  Have you ever wanted to attract your visitors attention in a less obtrusive way?
Now you can, and it is really easy with content that is actually part of your web page.
Lots of designs are included to make your extended information blend more pleasingly into your current design.
Here is the best part, your visitors will not need to resort to using pop-up blockers and your message will always be delivered with a friendly option to hide the additional content that responds automatically with a simple click.

Sorry for all the edits to that last post.  It turns out that you can't use the word a lert in your text anymore.

The forums just strip everything off starting with that word and everything after.  That is a very poor way of blocking s cript insertion if you ask me, but that is another topic all together.

Hmmm... actually, I might be missing something...  What is a "traditional" pop-up?

I'm trying to understand how you are differentiating between windows that are laid over-top a web page.  Using DIVs to float over a page, a javascript window, a flash window, or some other approach, still equates to some entity that is sitting over content that I have to move or close.  Is that correct?   How is it less obtrusive if I have to still move or close that pop-up?

I'm not arguing that Chris's approach might be more clever - I understand that he's an excellent programmer, so it probably is.  But the approach taken does not change the end-result does it?

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something... my apologies if I'm being dense...
