By changing the doctype on a skin browsers will now render the HTML differently, so you might have to go through and modify your skin to work with a different doctype.

Your skin also needs to be XHTML 1.1 compliant. You can check this by setting the Formating and Validation option to XHTML 1.1 in Visual Studio or Dream Weaver. For instance tags needs to be in lower case and you should use most of the sizing element in styles instead of using Width and Height parameters.
