The "new yesterday" number is actually "new in the last 24 hours",

I don't think in any country that yesterday means the prior 24 hours ...

so if yesterday is prior 24 hours, what does today mean...   the last second and a prediction of the future?  :)

I had that that a little wrong.  
Yesterday is the sliding window of the previous 24 hours starting 48 hours ago up until 24 hours ago. 
Today is the previous 24 hours up until now. 

And then there is caching that comes into play, which would offset it for a specific time until the cache expired, then it would "catch up", so depending on when you view the page and if caching is happening it is pretty hard to take the numbers as "real".

The users online module is just a vanity thing in my opinion.  You can't really use it for meaningful stats and the online aspect of it can easily be skewed also since it uses a window for online time too.

You read my mind.  If half of the current users would all kick $1 in the kitty, I could get that new boat I've had my eye on.... :)  Admins would have to ensure no funny business, though...none of that create account magic that adds a new users every 1.2 seconds and some simple math.

 

Count me in.  We could create a portal much like the current population sites that have a rolling number centered on the screen with a countdown clock.  :)
