Craig,

Doing a bit of digging I found this article, http://blogs.msdn.com/tess/archive/2006/08/02/686373.aspx,

It appears that the mutiple file issue is ONLY if loading .ascx .aspx, etc. related code files that require dynamic compilation.  Now folder creation is a possibility, but again, i'm not sure exactly how widespread it is.   If this issue was really major, there is no way that ASP.NET could continue to be utilized.

Now loading multiple code files, and those types of updates, yes they will cause a performance hit, there is no way around it.

Hi Mitch

Certainly the problem continues, in our case all implementations are being impacted by this frequent recycling. So fr it has been difficult to trace the reason for thi to ocur, In a controlled test box there should be nothing causing files or folders to change but the recycling continues like clockwork.

Thanks for the link, It will help with further analsysi.

Hi,

Creating a directory under /Dotnetnuke with anything other than Network Service account causes AppDomain to shut down. I found this when a site started recycling periodically. There was a scheduled data transfer that included creating and cleaning up a temp folder.

I'm not sure if this affects directories under /Portals folder.

Hello experts,

After reading your posts, I have more ideas about the Shutdown issue. At first I blame the ISP, but now seems like it's a IIS + DNN thing.

I still have questions.

1) Why the recycle schedule is so random and I can't see any pattern. Someting more frequent and take longer to restart.

2) Sometime even I was using the site, it will do the App Shutdown as well, leaving me the error page. I was not puting in or making any change to the DNN files at that time. I was just browsing around.

3) I used OptIn email for scheduled background mail blasting. Do those mailing tasks count as "idling" the DNN? I found the App Shutdown occured between my scheduled 2-minutes interval email blasting.

If your DNN installation is using up lots of memory and you don't have enough memory allocated in IIS this can happen.
It's fairly typical in shared hosting environments.

If you are running an earlier version of DNN I recommend upgrading to 4.9.2 or even 5.0.1 when it is out. You might also wish to upgrade your third party modules.

"leaving me the error page" .. what does this mean? You mean the event is logged in the event viewer?

Thanks
