I have a DNN site that has been hacked three times today.

The "hack" is not goinging access to DNN pages or the database (as far as I can tell) but rather, it is placing index.htm and other .htm files in the root directory of the DNN install. Because IIS was setup to display index.htm before default.aspx, the files were showing up on the website. Now I have changed IIS to nto display index.htm, but how the heck is the hacker doing this?

I believe it is DNN related because searching for the hacker's messages in Google revieled other DNN installs with the same hack.

I am running DNN 4.x - has anyone had any similar experiences or know of any solutions or atleast a way to monitor what is going on?

The only thing I see in the logs are several "Application Shutting Down" and "Application Started" messages. There were also interesting entries over the weekend where users accounts were attempted to be created with passwords like "A href=....."

by default configuration, DotNetNuke does not grant access to the root folder of the installation. This is however a severe problem, you might discuss with our security experts, send an emailt to Security (at) dotnetnuke.com.

This is not a DotNetNuke issue, it's an issue with IIS and security settings.

I beg to differ. It may be an issue with both IIS and DNN, but from what I have seen, there are several DNN sites that have all had this occur. That leaves only a few possibilities:

(1) coincidence

(2) it is an issue with DNN solely

(3) DNN's configuration leads admins to leave IIS vulnerable

None of our Non-DNN IIS websites have been vicitms of these hackers. We have quite similar configurations.

Care to elaborate?
