We have our production site up and running and are trying to copy it to a test server.  We backed up the site and the database and copied them to the new server.  We then modified the web.config file for the database connection.  We are getting the following error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetSiteSetting(Int32 PortalId, String SettingName) +36
   DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +2968
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +92
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +64

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You will need to add a portal alias for your new URL.  You can manually add this to the PortalAlias table if needed.

We had already added the ip address to the PortalAlias table.  We have also double checked the connection string in the web.config file to make sure we are able to connect to the database.  Can you give us a few more ideas?

Thanks!

After you added the portal alias did you restart the web application?  (Portal Ailases are cached so you must restart the application).  You can restart the app if needed by adding a space to a non critical section of the web.config!

What we discovered was that scripting was used to port the database which reset the module ID's in the Modules table.  We are going back to a backup/restore method of porting the database.

Thanks for your help.
