The message that I would get is as follows;   

sys.webforms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: This message received from the server could notbe parsed. Common causes for this error are when the response is modified by calls to response. write(), response filters, http modules, or server trace is enabled. Details: Error parsing near 'r']|"datatypecheck"|<?object></layer></s'.

I did the same thing to make it go away.  For me, this was happening with uploading a skin and with uploads through file manager, and if I recall, even uploading a logo to replace the DNN logo.
