In the meantime I have a hundred users to import. Any ideas on a workaround until the fix is released?

the only option is to modify the core code yourself and recompile or using a 3rd party module that comes with email notification support.

Very frustrating. Modify the core code and recompile? But I guess this isn't a big deal since not many have posted here.
