I have a notebook that works great except when it comes to unzipping archives. Then it goes very slow, 100% CPU, and the CPU heats up. I've had it tested for problems with CPU, hard drive, memory. Nothing shows up. It works fine otherwise - never a problem.

But it is so slow unzipping large archives, and gets too hot anyway - I remote to a 600 Mhz machine on my network, and unzip larger files there, and map a drive and copy them across.

BTW, the same problem with the native XP unpacker as well as with Winzip after I installed it looking for a fix.

Curious. But it's not the archive file, at any rate.

That could be a faulty FPU (Floating Point Unit) within the CPU (Central Processing Unit). In the old days an 8086 had a slot for an 8087 coprocessor. I think they combined the CPU / FPU with the 486 or the 586 (Pentium). I last time I saw this problem was in the 1980s, with C math libraries that used floating point calculations!

I would check if the manufacturer has a diagnostic program to test this.

What would be interesting is to know if a similar notebook behaves the same way or not.

In any case, it is very rare nowadays.

You may have found a magic number or calculation problem with the WinZip formula, or your CPU, memory or hard drive may be damaged. Is there any way to test the exact file on a different (or similar) system? You may also want to contact your PC manufacturer to see if they have a diagnostic test available.

Very odd.

John,  one more suggestion...

Check the probperties of your downloaded file.  On the "General" tab at the bottom do you see a message saying...

"Security:  This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this comoputer:"

If so, there should be an "[Unblock]" button to the right of the message.  Click the ublock button then click "OK".  Try unzipping again.  It should be back to normal.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't use windows XP to unzip files, I think windows checks every file befiore unzipping it. My system takes ages even for smaller packages.

Try using something like 7 Zip you will be amazed at the difference.
