First let me say I have loaded the 4.02 DNN and reskinned it and this is just the coolest thing I have seen in a long time.  You guys rock!

I have been using 2.something for a long time now and everything that bothered me about it has been fixed and a whole lot more. Very cool!

Ok, I did not have much luck upgrading so I am bitting the bullet and manually going from version 2 to version 4.  I seem to be having problems running both on the same box.  It's a shinny new Windows 2003 OS server.  I had version 4 working, then I moved over version 2, and now I can't get version 4 working again.  I have a feeling the two web.config files are fighting over the "DotNetNuke" references.  Can anyone confirm this could be an issue?  Or did I just break something?  I can reinstall version 4 but I wanted to make sure I'm trying to do the impossible before I do.

Once again, you guys have done a great job with version 4.  It's just amazing!  As a software developer I know you get largely negative feedback so I just wanted to say..."this is fantastic...keep up the great work!".

What you are seeing is an application pool issue (I ran into this when I first switched to .Net 2.0 and DNN 4.0 and still had lagacy sites). What you need to do is create an app-pool for the .Net 1.1 sites (DNN1, 2, & 3) and one for the .Net 2.0 sites (DNN 4). Also, you have to make sure that each site is running under the correct .Net framework (1.1 or 2.0).  There is an ASP.Net switching application (free) that you can download and use to switch .Net frameworks at a website and v-dir level: http://www.denisbauer.com/NETTools/ASPNETVersionSwitcher.aspx

To create and application pool in IIS 6 do the following:

  1. Open IIS 6 Management Console (MMC)
  2. Expand the first node of the treeview (servername) so you see "Application Pools"
  3. Right click "Application Pools" and select "New > Application Pool"
  4. Name the pool (I normally go with either framework, site or combo - i.e. mysite11 or mysite20)
  5. Click OK

To configuring a website to use a specific app-pool do the following:

  1. Open IIS 6 Management Console (MMC)
  2. Expand the first node of the treeview (servername) so you see "Web Sites"
  3. Expand "Web Sites"
  4. Right click your website and select "Properties"
  5. Select the "Home Directory" tab
  6. In the "Application Settings" section (bottom) you will see the "Application Pool" dropdown, select the correct pool
  7. Click OK

You will want to repeat these steps for each site creating the pool and assigning it to its correct site.

Robert,

This was very helpful.  Thank you for your help.  I have learned a great deal about IIS 6 and I am making progress.  I have another problem that seems to be out there.  No help on it yet.  Here it is from another post:

I'm installing dnn4 on w2k3 server, iis 6.0. On my testenvironment this is functioning perfect, but when I install on my production server I keek getting the same configuration error:

Server Error in '/DotNetNuke4' Application.: Section or group name 'data' is already defined. Updates to this may only occur at the configuration level where it is defined.

Line 4: <sectionGroup name="dotnetnuke">
Line 5: <!-- the requirePermission attribute will cause a syntax warning - please ignore - it is required for Medium Trust support-->
Line 6: <section name="data" requirePermission="false" type="DotNetNuke.Framework.Providers.ProviderConfigurationHandler, DotNetNuke"/>
Line 7: <section name="logging" requirePermission="false" type="DotNetNuke.Framework.Providers.ProviderConfigurationHandler, DotNetNuke"/>
Line 8: <section name="scheduling" requirePermission="false" type="DotNetNuke.Framework.Providers.ProviderConfigurationHandler, DotNetNuke"/>

I have tried almost everything. Does anybody have an idea about what this means!

Any help is apriciated. Thanks in advance.

I get the same thing.  I had my two sites running at one point. Don't know what I did to get it working and then I broke it again.  I have checked everything 12 times.  Permissions, application pool, ASP version, web config settings, Virtual Dir properties, and I even bought the IIS 6 Pocket consultant. I guess I'll try rebuilding the new site from scratch again.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

I've definitely got my different DNN installs running under separate application pools, set up to use ASP.NET 2 when necessary, yet they continually appear to be looking at the web.config running on the root default site.

I can't find any way of telling the application pool which web.config to look at - in fact the same error that appears in the web browser appears in the 'Edit Configuration' of the ASP.NET tab of the IIS virtual directory properties. - "Section or group name 'data' is already defined. "

Is it actually possible to get different DNN installs to play together on the same server?? (I don't think I've ever been able to do this, from version 1 on...)

I am getting the same error. I used to be able to comment out the HTTPModules section in the web.config of the second site under the root site.

The server reads the root web.config and doesn't like the second web.config in the Virtual Directory under thr root site. So if you comment out the HTTPModul;es from the second web.config all was well in DNN 3.2 but not in DNN4

Any ideas on how to get 2 DNN4 Web sites to work under the same domain?
