Being new to dnn and not a developer any new information I hear is valuable.  I am in the process of finding modules and figuring out how to make what is out there work for my site.  With a limited budget making the right decisions on modules is very important.  I've looked for module review sites and things like that but what few I have found seem to have reviews of the module version from a year or two before, though even these are helpful.  I am trying modules out on a local installation before I buy where I can but not all have that option.

I've just added a DotNetNuke modules reviews section to my website, only two so far - but any requests will be considered.

http://www.bestwebsites.co.nz/dotnetnuke/module-reviews/

So far I've only got a "these modules are so great you must get them right now" section, but I will probably want to add a "these are pretty good modules" section and a "these are awful, stay away" section at some point ..

JK.

as for module reviews, there was a while on snowcovered that a module developer could approve or disapprove his review. Dont know how its now havent had much on snowcovered lately.

I know Nina was workign on a site fro it, but dont know whats the state of it. But in general i havent seen bad reviews of skins and module while I or my cleints encountered plenty on some of them.

Another somethign I do often in use the xepient smart module , then build my own usercontrol based application. I load this in the smartmodule and then i dont need to have all functionality in dnn but ust keep database seperate or have real admin work done in seperate admin.

To play devil's advocate here, how much did you pay for the module/subscription to begin with?

This is not directed at you; it amazes me how much people will complain about a module they pay pennies on the dollar for in terms of what it would have cost to develop that functionality, then go ballistic when it doesn't work as they would expect.

As for your scenario, unfortunately this could have all been avoided had you followed the simple process of backing up your database and file system before installing the module or upgrading, as any good DNN consultant/module developer will tell you to do.

I'm glad you got your situation resolved, it is unfortunate it took that long to do.

In some cases I would agree with you Chris - there are quite a few people out there that expect the world for $25.

But......  when you make the decision to become a vendor (third party developer) then you accept the responsibility for support and dealing with sometimes difficult customers no matter what you charge for your product.  This is the same no matter what business you enter into. The good thing is that most normal customers don't expect the world - they just expect you to be professional, return your emails (at least the first few and if you're too dense to get it after that then shame on you), and maybe test your product to make sure it is not going to crash entire systems before you release it.  Not too demanding.  And.... most developers I have dealt with have been very professional and even went beyond my expectations.  i.e. Kelly Ford @ Xmod, Richard @ dnnstuff.com, Scott @ Ventrian, are just a couple of examples I have personally dealt with.

So I would say, overall, that most third party DNN developers are very professional and offer excellent support.  This is what makes the bad ones stand out even further - once you have experienced good customer service you begin to expect it.  And if I remember correctly the bad developers are one of the main reasons DNN came out with their module review process?
