Rodney,

Just some comments from me as requested.... I have found that each newsletter module tends to have a different focus. Obviously each developer started out reacting to a problem or a need and filled that. The areas focused on are these:

  • Newsletter management - Drafts, archives, content production
  • Mailing list management - Opt-ins, opt-outs, import/export,
  • Delivery management - Servers, methods

I require all three of the above functions. As well, I require that the module be able to be fully utilised by any assigned role - Not just portal administrators.

  • Dataspring's Opt-in focuses on list management tools, but has no useful newsletter management and cannot be fully utilised by non-admins. Chad is always friendly, but there's often a feeling of disconnect between him and the module development. I have a folder full of about 6-7 Datasprings modules that have simply never been improved and never been usable to me as-is. I also have plenty of tickets of feedback and suggestions that ultimately have gone nowhere at all. I was pretty nice in my assessment here http://www.datasprings.com/Products/ProductForums/tabid/727/forumid/1/postid/2704/view/topic/language/en-US/Default.aspx and also part way down this thread here http://www.datasprings.com/Products/ProductForums/tabid/727/forumid/4/postid/2748/view/topic/language/en-US/Default.aspx
    Overall: 3/5
  • That module by the portalstore guy gets a big fat zero because he never responds to anything. 0/5
  • Onyak's Nuke 4lert - I've spent many hours testing this module and have provided hours of written and video feedback to Chris in order to ensure that it ended up a module that I could put into service. This module has good list management and excellent delivery management with per-campaign smtp settings even. The focus on campaigns is a little different from the other modules and this is also one of the most powerful features when used properly for repeat marketing. The SQL functionality is beyond me but is also potentially very powerful in the right hands - automatically include your site content in your newsletter. The developer has a rare (in the dnn dev scene) sense of corporate purpose, and when enthused is highly productive.. but is also unresponsive when bored. I'm using this module and give it 4/5. There are areas that need improvement but at least it's moving along at a reasonable pace.
  • Interactivewebs's newsletter module has a big focus on delivery management, and appears to do all the right things there. I gave it a miss because there is no newsletter and no list management. 2/5
  • Orizonti's Newsletter - This was an excellent freebie module that went dead ages ago and like all of Russell's modules, hasn't been touched since. It's now too buggy to use, which is a shame because it was a fantastic step up from the core newsletter. 0/5
  • There are 2-3 other newsletter modules on Snowcovered that are effectively just lifting the core newsletter out of the admin menu. These are really only useful for sending small notifications to specific groups.

You have to be very specific about how you want each of the three areas of functionality to be handled. My advice is to test Onyak's module, because I can see value in automated marketing campaigns at some point in the future of your site.

Wow - forgot about the dreaded "a 3 ert" word bug and lost my post...

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the summary - I was not even aware that Nuke Aert might fulfil my needs - it sounds pretty good (my requirements are more focused on delivery and not newsletter storing or list management). I've been trying to download their trial version from their site but it goes into an infinite loop and I can't find it so I raised a support call.

I liked the sound of InteractiveWebs (focus on delivery) but I have not yet received a response to my email so not overly keen.

I've had an answer from Chad (DataSprings) about the new version, but as a fellow develoepr I know it's hard to pinpoint a timeframe for new versions so I will not rely on these - DataSprings stills seems the cheapest/most established so I am leaning towards this. I am trying a few demos today but have to send the newsletter out in the next 10 hours so do not have much time for each trial.

Rod - I did the same and most of my post evaporated as well.

I have used NukeAlurrt and what I like about it is that you can create custom tokens which take personalized parameters, and therefore you can pull content into each email which is unique to each recepient. You can also go beyond the opt-in and opt-out model to determine who will receive your emails based upon SQL queries.

Thus I can use this for business applications in the following manner - in conjunction with Enterprise forms, which is my main working module - I can query an Enterprise form table to see which students have selected a particular guidance counselor in a student application. in the same or a similar query I can join to a guidance counselor response table to see if the guidance counselor has or has not yet provided info on this student. If not, info regarding the student gets added to the email. In fact, info on each such student gets put into the single email, so the guidance counselor gets an email report with a list of "Here are the students for whom you need to provide information ..." So this data is pulled with the customized tokens for the email content. This query runs second, however ... the first query finds a list of all guidance counselors who have such students, to determine who will get an email (a distinct list) ... and then as the email is being sent, the other query runs to create content for each person individually. Guidance Counselors who haven't been selected or who have already responded for all students don't get an email notification. That is an improvement over using a DNN role for Guidance Counselors (which role does exist but I don't use it for this).

This kind of business need is what I find so necessary ... we'll use NukeAlurrt for regular email campaigns in more customary ways as well - but what excites me are the unique ways it can be used by being manipulated with SQL based results. Combine this with Enterprise forms which can run SQL queries at each work flow step to run any sproc ... imagination is the limit.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to NA 3 ...

edit: what I was wondering, though, is if Bulk Email or other such modules provide similar functionality as I describe here.
