Alex,

Thanks for this.

Could you elaborate on "when in fact it is far more flexible in so many ways".

Thanks,

Sam

I think I'll jumo into this one. I pick randomly from blog posts by Shaun on the subject, remarks from customers and my own experience in this. I think Alex mentioned flexibility here to denote the ease with which you can (1) expand the DNN platform, (2) find people who will help you with this, for free or not, and (3) the ease with which you can upload stuff into DNN. I make a big point out of the latter. I can go into a customer's site with no more than a (temporary) host login and extend their platform to do what they want. Rarely do I need to go deeper. DNN includes a wonderful installer that allows me to package my product so it uploads/upgrades without a hitch and I know what will happen on the customer's installation. Just download the zip, upload it into your dnn, and voila. If I pair this with automated build processes using NANT for instance (which I use), it is a question of minutes between code change, and production change. I call that flexible.

Add to this the fact that the full codebase of DNN is public and it is no surprise that it has become so popular with .NET developers.

My 2cts. Back to you Alex ;-)

Peter

PS I believe we have Vista issues tackled in DMX 4. At least I can access WebDAV with my Vista (duh, why did I ever install this O/S?) Ultimate (stands for ultimate amount of hours sunk into this) laptop.

Peter,

I had to laugh at this :

"my Vista (duh, why did I ever install this O/S?) Ultimate (stands for ultimate amount of hours sunk into this) laptop."

I tried using it as a base for some virtual machines on a slightly older machine P4 2.4GHZ / 2GB RAM PC, but had all sorts of hardware issues, perhaps the MOBO supplier is partly to blame, but having such competent hardward made obsolete so quickly seems wrong to me. So I restored my old image and smiling again.

Thanks for your comments - very compelling.

It would be very interesting to see if one is able to get some form of forms workflow like sharepoint provides with infopath/Workflow Foundation/forms server etc. However I have seen a WF Service setup which is accessed from DNN (Credit to Michael Washington).

A few years back, I had to choose between DNN and Sharepoint for a client.  I chose DNN and have never looked back ;)

JK,

Very interesting.

1)What were you trying to achieve ie Document Management, System integration, Portalisation, Workflows etcs...

2)Why did you choose DNN?

3)In hindsight why did you not look back?

Thanks for your help and experience.

With regard to workflow, my requirements are more to do with form routing rather than document approval. So in Sharepoint one would typically use a combination of Windows Workflow Foundation and Infopath forms - not sure whether how this would be achieved in the DNN world, however one could write a custom ASCX module which utilitises WWF I suspect...

We have a product called Enterprise forms, designed specifically for workflow and content management.  I think you'll find Enterprise forms is the only fully featured workflow solution for DNN available curently.  Most of our larger clients find Enterprise forms sufficient for their workflow needs while a minor percentage require additional features added due to their unique circumstance.  Any questions on the product feel free to discuss further in our product forums.
