Chris - I hope your "party" does well for you. I vote for a person rather than a party. And I won't be voting for either of the corporate owned party candidates.

While it is completely your choice to vote what you wish, you do realize your vote becomes even more meaningless than mine by doing so? :) Not that either of our votes will count for much.

<opposition begins>

I disagree completely and voted for Obama! Just want to make sure the Democratic viewpoint is here to counteract the propaganda above

With Palin on the ticket the decision was made for me when they announced at the RNC.

I tend to have pretty strong feelings about politics.  However, I also have pretty strong feelings about people's right to their opinion & freedom to express it.

What discourages me most, however, is when opinion is so heavily shaped by something other than reasoning & discernment.  I fear that we have become a nation more influenced by "American Idol", daytime television and smooth talk than by foundational (ideally non-controversial) values like accountability, responsibility, generosity & freedom.  We boil consideration of difficult issues down to 5 second soundbites... we blame all of our difficulties on convenient targets like "wall street ceo's"... we are always looking for the easy way out and someone else to blame; to make people either "good" or "bad" when we are all a mixture of both.  It is no wonder that a widely promoted media message of "we will take care of you" rings so loudly.

I am a registered independent.  I believe in the politics (and life) of personal accountability.  My family gives generously of our time & money to our church, our community and other charities.  I believe that the sanctity of human life is more important than the ethical treatment of animals.  I was born to a lower-middle class, broken family and financed my own education over a 10 year repayment period.  I live frugally; within my means; no car less than 7 years old; no credit card debt.  I invest as much as possible for my families future.  I have been a small business employer for the last 10 years of my life and know the pressure and responsibility of helping someone else feed their family; and of letting people go in the wake of financial turmoil after the collapse of Enron and the tragedy of 911.  I am Caucasian, raised in a state (AK) where racism is not even understood, but have have been often accused of being racist, sexist or any number of things because of my gender and the color of my skin.  I value truthfulness; even when it hurts.  I was raised to "take my lumps" when I mess up and learn from them, not to rationalize or shift blame.  I believe that the folks I hang out with influence my reasoning... and so while I know a lot of people, I choose who I fellowship with.  I care who my kids hang out with.  I care that my son behaves not to avoid losing his X-Box time... but because he is learning to reason and make good choices; that he is learning wisdom & discernment and his heart and mind are growing.

However you vote... I hope you do so with a lot of factual information; that your vote comes from a place of reasoned analysis, rather than hyperbole; that hope, which should inspire us, does not replace wisdom & discernment which should guide us.  I hope you are willing to commit to the personal work of improving our country... because if we simply vote, without working and changing our own behavior, then we continue to add to the problems we expect others to solve for us.  No candidate running for office and no form of government can bring about the "change" people seem to be saying they want... I question whether if we, as a nation, would really want all these things if we truly understood their cost?

I am off to the polls to vote.  And this afternoon and tomorrow... and the next day... I will be back to working hard, employing others, giving generously (without being taxed to do so).  My concern is whether there will be others joining me in the hard work of paying off our debt, managing our spending and raising our children with a sense of responsibility, rather than entitlement.

God Bless America... and your right to vote.

Cheers.

Nicely put Scott. I hold much the same values and wish you much wisdom in the voting booth.

Now to my friend Chris ... <politics> I think most people on the planet are fed up with the rhetoric coming from DC for the past 8 years. And they very much identify this with a particular party. From your words I understand you're a 'banana republican' (I heard this once on TV from a democrat who said it to mean: I'd vote for a banana if it were labeled democrat). Anyways, I hope as many people on this planet for a change of course. The reason is simply this: the current world economy is geared towards keeping American loans going. This has become very evident lately and it is why many people around the world will feel more strongly than usual about this election as we are more effected now then ever. I was shocked to find how many banks in Europe got so deeply involved in the trade of bad debts. The whole credit crisis has brought to light that the economy is driven by people who have no qualms about spending money they don't have. Both individually and as a nation. How come republicans believe you can spend more dollars than you earn? And I mean trillions? And why is it subsequently perceived socialist when someone else suggests that the books have to be balanced in some way? To Tony: you fear a tax increase, but you're relying on China and other foreign investments to keep you afloat right now. So who do you feel should pay for this? It is pretty puzzling from an outsider point of view. Here (Switzerland) we pay taxes (grudgingly as all people on the planet) but we get to vote for people that spend those taxes wisely (on roads, schools, hospitals, etc) and in the case of Switzerland particularly, one often votes for the issues themselves again in referenda. That works relatively well here. Just a suggestion.</politics>

Well Chris we can at least agree on one thing - neither of our votes count for much.  One thing for sure this is / has been one of the more emotionally charged elections I have seen. Lot's of people getting excited and voicing their opinions. Which to me is a very good thing and we have at least won that this time.

The way I see it the sometimes popular thinking that you are throwing your vote away because someone doesn't have a chance to win is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. If your favorite sports team doesn't have a chance to win on Sunday do you cheer for the other side?  No, an independent won't win this election. BUT, if enough people would vote that way then we might have at least a chance of capturing the attention of the "I do whatever the media tells me to do" crowd for the next election.  If that happens, in two or three more elections average American's might be able to take back our country from the lobbyists and corporations. No, I'm not a total anti-business person at all but things have gone way too far. I'm not a tax the rich to save the poor either. The way I see it if you got your money by working hard, being smart, or both then you deserve it. But if you got your money, or are maintaining / growing your money by working the system, bribing politians, etc. shame on us for allowing you to do it.

Don't have a lot of time to spend on opencongress.org educating yourself?  Some easy tips for next election:

  • Pick out the candidates who have spent the most money and vote for someone else!
  • Determine the candidates the media is pushing the hardest and vote for someone else.
  • Vote for those that have the LEAST amount of political experience
  • Congress doesn't want to implement term limits? No problem - never vote for an incumbant!
