In my opinion, the news that Microsoft has released an open source CMS is great news to the DotNetNuke project in many ways. I will list a couple below:
- increased competition for DotNetNuke
- increased exposure for DotNetNuke
I have seen the first example already mentioned in blog posts, forum posts, and Tweets, and agree that any competition of one product vs. another can help both by pushing them along in a friendly rivalry. However, being that DNN has so many years of development behind it already, and such a large ecosystem of talented developers working on products and service offerings, it may take Oxite some time to apply pressure in certain areas (if any at all.)
In the second example - exposure - the opportunity for the DotNetNuke community is NOW! There will likely be a tremendous amount of chatter about Oxite in the upcoming days and weeks, and it is definitely something to capitalize on. For those in the DNN community who are passionate about the project, and who enjoy evangelizing the platform, there will be ample opportunity to visit scores of articles devoted to the Oxite offering and to make your voice heard.
So far, I have read many "replies" to stories about Oxite where readers are speaking only about the potential of the new MS product vs. Drupal, Joomla, etc. It begs the question - are they even aware of another MS-based open source app such as DotNetNuke? And even if they are - when is the last time they took DNN out for a test drive? Are they up-to-date with our most recent versions, the incredible growth of our community, or the Corp's recent funding announcement?
