Joe, part of the problem is that no one in the corp gave clear indication when 5.00 will be released. A lot of people including myself asked the question "When will 5.0 be released?" and we got answers like It's ready when it's ready. Vague answers. So what do users like me think? If these people have no idea when it's going to be released, maybe DNN 5.0 still needs a lot of work and it will take them a bit more time. No need to download it NOW when there could be a lot of changes down the road. Let them work on it and fix it until we have better idea when it's going to be released.

We didn't ask for an exact date. All we needed some kind of time frame. and suddenly 5.0 is released a day before Christmas without any warnings!

So what was going on? You knew when to release but were holding off to make it a Christmas surprise!? and then you guys complaim you didn't get enough feedback.

I had NO idea it was going to be released in December. Personally I was busy testing new 4.9 (my forst DNN taste) installs. Maybe had I known it was going to be released that soon, I would have moved to 5.0 instead.

You can see Will Morganweck's forum post which includes a link to the video showing their upgrade process to DotNetNuke 5.0.

Jeff, my biggest hearburn in this whole process is that we have had DotNetNuke 5 RC2 available since the beginning of November with very few issues being logged against it.  Had we gotten more feedback that indicated stability problems we likely would have delayed this release for one more round.  That is not to say that there were not some issues created in the final packaging - there certainly were, but there are a lot of the problems being discussed which should have been found long before the final release.  As an Open Source project we absolutely rely on feedback for major releases being a collaborative effort with the community.

The good news is that we are getting lots of good bug reports now, many of which will be fixed for the next version which should be out in a couple of weeks.

Let me just check something -  an RC (Release Candidate) build supposed to be the same as release, but with bugs fixed??? This IS NOT THE SAME.

Can you please clarify that the release in November is the same as the release on Christmas Day, with the 'very few issues' fixed?

I may be missing something here, but it seems like two are completely different - i have asked several people who can confirm the download on 24th is so different from the RC2 candidate is different enough that it wasn't the same in their eyes.

I have alot more thoughts on this matter, but I think I will wait until I'm not so tired and annoyed with this before writing something.

Yes RC2 is different from the full release, why would you expect it not to be Nina? The current release evolved from RC2, it's not like it was a seperate project or anything.

I think Joe is stating we had a heck of a lot more feedback in the full release than in RC2, that's all. If you want to interpret what "few" means then go and have a look at Gemini and get the hard facts (generate a report, give us the hard facts, DIY). Anyway retrospective is always a good thing, but the quicker we get bug reports in the better it can be evaled that a release is ready. We just can't do ALL the bug testing ourselves.

Yes I'm sure there are some changes that could not have been detected in RC2 (it would be impossible not to avoid this unless we are totally bug free), but there are a heck of a lot of issues in RC2 that could have been found out (FLAME ALERT: before anybody says I'm blaming the community for this - I'm not).

I think others make very important points as well, so please let's not have a competition on who is right or wrong... I actually think everyone is more or less right it just depends which view you take (I too have my own views that I'm not expressing here), but understand the phrase "Release Candidate" is a message to the community that states "please test", if they are prepared and able to do it that is, The number afterwards directly after the word "RC" I would say is fairly insignificant factor; understand DNN 5 had 7 BETAs (from memory, correct me if I'm wrong).

As to making release dates public, this is difficult as well, as if we go over the "deadline" we will hear no end of complaints from that angle. We cannot win either way, everybody has different ideas.

Anyway if you want the cold hard facts then be sure to follow Gemini, the forums, the blogs and contribute. Put your energy and time into this... Warning - this is time consuming, but every little helps.....
