What if it is FREE? I have paid for modules that have not been all that they were meant to be. What will you personally do about that?

Attitudes like that seem to be the source of most problems.  especially when followed directly by

How ever can the DNN community repay you for your kindness?

And why did I waste time to respond?

I must say I really don't understand how or why this thread was started.

Most of this is all done quite easily in the settings, and I would have thought intuitive for most.  If someone claims to be familiar and experienced with DNN and these modules, they surely must be able to sort all of this out quickly and easily.

How someone can have spent lots of time/money on this and been unable to sort it... I haven't a clue.

I must say that I, too, am surprised this thread wasn't immediately canned by a moderator purely on the basis of the thread title.  The actual complaints in the initial post I can deal with (though it'd be nice to have such complaints voiced in a friendlier manner).

A few observations:

  1. No Response:  Pat apparently received no responses to a perfectly nice request for info a week ago on 4/7.  Although I have very little respect for Pat's follow-up technique, I'll admit that a "no-response" post can be irritating on a site with 650,000+ registered users...especially if you're feeling the crunch from a deadline.  It's worth noting though that, instead of posting to "Chat About It", it probably would have helped if Pat had posted a "Forum" module question in the "Forum" module category, a "Blog" module question in the "Blog" module category, etc.

  2. No Incentive:  There is no incentive for anyone with so few posts as "Pat" to be nice in these forums.  So what if you get marked as an, ahem, "unkind individual"?  If people begin to recognize your account and ignore your posts you can simply change your displayname or, if your account is revoked, just make a new one in 30 seconds.  Without any incentive to be nice, any kindness shown in the forums must be attributed to people being geniunely nice people.  Without incentive, forum members who are not nice have little reason to pretend to be so if they don't think their questions (demands?) are being answered (see item #1).

  3. No Appreciation:  As self-reported in another thread, Pat's profession has been the creation of websites (as part of a team) for more than two years exclusively using DNN.  It seems to follow that the free DNN web framework has been a big contributor to Pat's means of making a living with little reciprocal appreciation or patience from Pat.  Yes, the workings of the Blog module were unclear to me the first time I installed it.  One Google search and twenty minutes later, though, I was up and running (and aware of how multiple bloggers could use the same module) thanks to the kind postings of those who had figured it out before me.  Pat's "question" on multiple users posting with the same blog module has been asked many times in these forums -- it's hard to believe that Pat did much of a search before asking for help (not that there is anything wrong with immediately asking for free help when one considers that time = money).

Customers don't pay you for a free web platform but rather for your knowledge on how to employ that free platform.  If you choose to employ DNN, one of the best sources of knowledge is the collective mindset of the active DNN forum members.  The forums are more useful as a resource than as a punching bag.

Or, for the time = money mindset, perhaps it's best put into monetary terms:

If your job demands that you correctly spell words, it's of no help to
rip out the pages of your dictionary while complaining that certain
words are needlessly hard to spell.

If your job demands that you effectively utilize DNN, consider the forum
members to be your dictionary.  Try to avoid ripping any pages as you
hunt down the answers your job depends on...

Ahh the quote of the day:

Of course this can be applied to just about anything...

Something to say though..   the man is a genius.    He gets no replies to first try ( as many threads also get no replies).   He returns with WTF and gets how many core and/or team replies?   Genius!
