I just built my first custom skin and due to an issue with a lightbox script ended up trying both ways - all CSS skin and html table skin.

I learned that I am no fan of CSS skins. The html skin works much better cross-browser.

I also learned that IE sucks!

With regards to OP's question - at the price point I'm inclined to believe I would have been better off using this service rather than building my own. But I can see one downside to it - when building my own skin I ran into several instances where something I thought looked / worked good in design needed to be tweaked or changed completely in actual use. If you're trying to build something unique those changes could get expensive.

mm I dont agree witth this I have been building cssbased skins without tables for years and it is true that they are less forgiving but as long as you follow the standard rules teh crowss browser compatibillity is much better.

I develop completely xhtml compliant and check in firefox. If that is completely working i( then I know it also looks good in other standard based browsers.). Then all I need to do from here is apply a few ie css hacks in a differnt stylesheet and it will also look good in ie.

I develop with a css grid framework based on 960.gs. You can download it from http://www.dnngrid960.com. This is for 960 grid but i am finalizing a tool that will gennerate the css for you for any width skin structure

You just need to make sure your contaiers dont break if the content is too long by either applying an overflow hidden or an overflow scroll this way i cotnent breaks out it wont break your design and you can fix it if needed.

Breaking out only happens with fixed width skins fluid skins usally just scale along. problem with fluid skins is most people have there screens larger and larger so the websites dont look good anymore, 90% of my skins are fixed width.
