Thanks for the pointers and explanation. I created a shiny new 5.1.2 installation at http://sandpit.livecommunities.co.uk with no modules at all on the home page. The view_state is still enormous. This leads me to think it is a fundamental "feature" of the core.

<p>It's true, there's nothing an ordinary DNN user can do about it especially most of the modules are not open source nowadays.What we can do is stored it in memory but this will make some modules malfunctioning.</p> <p>Althought search engine cralwers do not read them but it still have to download the whole page before indexing the page. With an average of 50Kb in DNN&#160;website pages, it does have a significant impact if a portal have more than 500 pages above. (Based on 3 of my DNN&#160;portals experience.)</p> <p>&#160;</p>
