Hello!

I am very excited to try DNN.

I am a newbie though, and have some question – an help would be greatly appreciated.

First about me – I have been programming websites in PHP for about 3 years now. I Discovered VB and VB.net recently and fell in love (Including studio.net) I am in the process of teaching myself and can’t wait to delve into it. Eventually (using VSexpress now) I plan on justifying Visual Studio Professional. Enough rambling – I was told about DNN and totally fell in love. But I don’t know too much – though I have read everything I could about it, (and paid for and watched most of the train-cert videos)  I know that some of these question could be simple, and very basic, so bare with me. Most of them deal with your opinion – being a veteran at this J

1)      I want to be able to write custom forms for capturing customer information, including an emailing after the form is filled out – is that available in basic DNN, or do I need a Module? If I need a Module which is the best?

2)      Is the MSSQL database available to all my modules in DNN?

3)      I really need a good Project Tracking system (timeline) – does anyone know of one? (Including graphical representation). I was thinking of Microsoft Share – but I would rather just stay in DNN if possible.

4)      I want to write custom database queries, so my managers can look something up (like how many customers live in Denver, CO) – is that available in DNN or does it have to be a module? (Again if so which is the best – in your opinion)

5)      What *exactly* IS xmod? I have read what I could, but to me it is vague and confusing. Is it

6)      Do I need Visual Studio loaded on my pc to work with DNN? I believe I do only if I am going to build modules. (Ha! – maybe in some time)

7)      I want to implement google maps – that access the database for addresses. I have seen some amazing google map modules, but does anyone know of what that will do that?

8)      I found a skin I like, and will probably purchase it – but in the future I would like to make my own – is there any information on how to do that?

9)      Your opinion on the DNN photo module? I am very curious on that, and wondering if I will have to purchase another. (Will it upload, and resize automatically?)

10)   How many levels of memberships can DNN support?

11)   How about a upload and  download shared document area – so people with certain permissions can do both (upload and download)?

12)  I would like something like an a “employment opportunity” page, that the actual secretaries can update with  - and maybe “current articles” (which could be jpgs) that they could do, so they didn’t have to call me all the time to do the updates. Then again that could go with a custom form / query that I build for them. Any thoughts on this?

AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH for even Reading this! It was longer than I expected. I am very excited to dive into this new world, and I appreciate so much all the hard work that goes into it (an HAS gone into it) – one day, maybe, I can give back to the DNN world.

Gabriel, it's refreshing to see this kind of enthusiasm.  I'll try and answer some of your questions, and I'm sure others will as well.

1) You'll need a module. The first place to look is usually the directory here on dotnetnuke.com, then most developers sell their modules on snowcovered.com
2) Yes.
3) There are several available, with differing features. Look for Onyak, Bring2Mind and on SnowCovered.
4) I believe there are several modules available for this, you might want to look for a free module named SQLGridSelectedView.
5) I don't know, but you could contact the developer.
6) Only if you are going to develop modules.
7) Yes, look for Bi4ce GoMap.
8) There's a skinning document in the documentation package. That's the best start. Then ask questions of Nina :>)
9) Sorry, I haven't used it.
10) DNN uses a roles-based security system. You set up roles and authorize members of those roles to view and/or edit the site pages and/or individual modules.
11) Easily done.  Sub-Zero Solutions has a combination  upload/download module...
12) Setup a role for your editors. Assign your chosen people to that role. Make an Employment page and set it to editable by members in that role.

Welcome to dotNetNuke! Visit the forums often, there's a mountain of info here and some very intelligent, helpful people as well.
Have fun experimenting with DNN too.  Just don't delete the login module...

My two biggest concerns right now:

1) Custom forms

2) Project Management.

I couldn't find anything on Bring2Mind for management - but Onyak seemed very cool. Has anyone else used them? Compared to xmod? I also couldn't find anything  in the Sub-Zero Solutions - but I am tired (been reading this stuff of the last 8 hours). A lot of these modules are for 3.2 as well - and I think I am going to load 4.0 - any opinions on that?

Thanks for the update on GoMap! It doesn't give a lot of detail on what it will allow for me to customize, but it looks great! (And free too)??

I am one that does a lot of reading and research before starting a project - so that is why I haven't done it yet. It might be the easiest thing in the wolrd. I am excited to use it, and to learn VStudio at the same time.

I saw all the skinning documentation after I posted - sorry about that. That I think I will leave to the developers (for now) I am more of a programer

Thanks again - and any help guiding me would be great!

Gabe
