This is not built in, however there are one or two third party modules that provide this function. Have a look on Snowcovered.com

Hi

I have read your post with interest and I too have a question, which I am still a bit confused about.

Say I have a website:  www.mywebsite.com and I wanted to add a subdomain using the same database and modules. Can this only be achieved if the subdomain is a child www.mysite.com/childubdomain and not a parent portal, www.parentsubdomain.mysite.com.

My hosting provider insists that each (parent) subdomain must have a new install of dnn with it's own database, modules etc.,  even though I am not using a domain name with extension as a subdomain.  Is this correct?

Thanks

Laura

I am currently running 6 sites off of one DNN install and database.

I don't want to say that your provider is wrong... but, they wrong.

I am going to take a stab at this one for you.  I currently have one DNN install and it is running 6 sites, each with their own Domain Names.

Here is how it works.

You create a Parent or Host Site(ex. http://www.something.com).  In the Host site you have an option to add a new Sub Portal.  This Sub Portal can have a completely different Domain Name, skin, etc.  It is basically just a completely different site.  All the Sub Portals are able to use the Modules and Skins that are installed in the Host Site.

A real life example of this would be my site (still working on it, just about done)  http://www.neighborhoodflier.com  (This is a parent)  I have a sub Portal site http://www.lehoa.org which can aslo be accessed at www.neighborhoodflier.com/lakesideestates.

As you can see these two sites look completely different and have different Domain Names, but they are both run off of one install of DotNetNuke.

I know that got long, but I hope it helps you out.

You need to setup the proper portal alias inside of Dotnetnuke.  You can do this buy going to:

  • Host
  • Portals
  • Select a Portal
  • Portal Alias

You will also need to point all DNS names to your Dotnetnuke site.

I am not sure what you know so if this doesn't make sense I can explain further.
