Sorry, I'm not the right person to give the answer (though as social groups and roles are the same thing AFAIK the answer would be yes)-. All the relevant folks who are working on that part are pretty busy working, so I'd recommend you keep an eye out for CTP2 and give us feedback then

In DotNetNuke 6.2, Groups and Roles are the same thing. This means you end up with the best features from both. More details on how this all works will be available the week after next when CTP2 is released.
