Great explanation and links - thanks - much appreciated.

The asp101 article got me thinking that the Friendly URL Module in DNN must already do something like this. I have not yet looked at that Module but I am assuming that it takes the friendly name typed in and does a Server.Transfer to the not-so-friendly name - which is what we're looking for here... not so?

I'm not sure it uses Server.Transfer, there are other methods too such as Context.RewritePath.  More signifcantly though for your purposes, I don't think it does what you're looking to do.  It sounds like you're trying to get it to convert incoming URLs.  The friendly URLs are "outgoing" --- they convert the plain old default.aspx with a tab id into a URL which displays search engine-friendly keywords.  It sounds like you want to convert incoming traffic.  You could use SiteUrls.config or a redirect module for that.
