After spending a whole day atttempting this install (at least 25 attempts on Visual Web Developer) and posting 5 questions (none of which have found an answer) I have run out of time and patience. I think I will try and devote whats left of my weekend trying to find another framework where hopefully, I will at least be able to get past the install.

What did stike me as amusing was the point of view of some posters that if DNN works in some scenarios, people that are struggling must be doing something wrong and that they had not read the install document. ( which related to build 4.0.2, a version not even available for download off this site) Now its seems that one other possible answer is to download the 3.x version attempt an upgrade.

I suppose you only have one question to ask yourself if you want to attempt this route : Are you feeling lucky ?

I think the concept of DNN is brilliant but its worth nothing if it cant be executed. After all , there is too much at stake for a large commercial web site.

I wouldn't give up on DNN too quickly as it is a great framework once you figure it out and get it working, however I will agree on many of your points.  The Starter Kit installation is a nightmare, a simple search here will show that (if forum search works that is).  And for support/post replies it is very hit or miss with most posts going unanswered.  You can post about critical core errors and they can easily go unanswered.  The biggest downside I see right now with DNN is lack of good solid community support and feedback from the core team.  It seems the value of the forum feedback has gone down hill sicne me move from the forums at asp.net, there seemed to be a larger community there to help.  On here it seems posts can go with no replies easily, not sure if it is due to fewer readers or the fact the forums are less than stable at times.

Most large commercial web sites will spend far more time and money than part of a weekend with Visual Web Developer while evaluating a content management system. Considering the ROI from a open source project that just happens to be free, it wouldn't hurt to continue to try to resolve your unique problem so that others may benefit from the experience.

On the other hand, you may have a situation that simply does not work. That it itself is interesting because thousands of other people have managed to make it work without such hassle.
