Actually, the Google link: command is broken, and has been for some time. It only returns a portion of what they know about, and you have no way of knowing what portion.
Slightly more accurate, is to use linkdomain: at yahoo, but this still is only yahoos index.

Also remember there is a difference between being indexed, and raking. You can be indexed in a couple of weeks, but Google may not show new sites in the serps for 6mo. to a year.

To clarify - I wasn't saying that using link exchanges or directories will get you a good ranking within 4 weeks, but a couple of good quality links (pr 4 or up) from exchanges or directories certainly can get you indexed and in search results in that timeframe.  You might be on page 10 of the results, but you're there.  ymmv.

I have never looked at SEO optimization or whatever. My site runs on DNN since version 2.0.4 and ranks good at Google. Google has indexed more then 40.000 pages from my site. It all comes down to content, valuable content and other sites linking to your site. How do you get other sites link to your site? Easy, good content. Do a search in Google on 'Small Business Server' (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=small+business+server&btnG=Google+Search) and you my site is listed third after Microsoft. Could not be any better.

What about the little guys? How do we get the good page rank? I have a site that I created for a local small business (www.blackhawksurfaces.com) and nobody's going to link to it. It's been indexed, but searching for keywords or terms in the text modules don't get very good results.

What are some suggestions for small business that don't generate a ton of traffic, aren't linked to very often, and are on a shoestring budget? Interested in some feedback

From a marketing point view you have to step into the shoes of your customer. Does the customer use the internet to find products like yours? I doubt it. Best advertising you can have with such a business is 'word-to-word' or how do you say that in English :-) I hope you understand what I mean. I once build a site for a small insurance agency and they were complaining that hardly anybody used the forms on their site to get quotes for insurances. It is just not the type of business and customers that use the web.

Another problem both types of business have is there are thousends of compatitors. The only way to get out of this is to establish a brand and be recognized by that brand, not by the product you sell. In my case 'Smallbizserver.Net' is a brand and recognizable logo that everybody knows. I was on a SMB meeting in the Netherlands and a lot of British people attended that. Lots (most) of them knew Smallbizserver! I can print T-Shirts with only the logo (no brandname) and people know what it is and *that* makes the difference. I could have choosen 5 years ago something like smallbusinessserver.net but nobody would see that as something unique.

I had a closer look at the way the site is build and what is written. Sorry if my writing sounds harsh to you, it is not meant that way. If you are trying to sell something that people ad to their houses you need to ad emotion to the way you present your ideas. The pictures are nice but why did you choose *that* specific product for that specific project. There must be more you can tell about "We pride ourselves on our creativity, ingenuity and workmanship. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Let us help you realize your vision today!" The writing on that site must been done by a male
