Manage Profile Properties Help

I have just loaded 4.3.5. I am new to DotNetNuke, but have been reading and playing with it for a few months now. I have been reading a lot about 3rd party Modules too. Recently I have been looking at 3rd party modules for adding content to members who will be registering. This is probably one of the more important things that I will need to do on my websites. But recently with the newer editions, I have noticed the option of “Add New Profile Property”. If this can do what I hope, it will save me $100’s. My question is, where can I find documentation on it? I have the new DNN book, read anything I could find on line, but I think I am missing it.

So here they are:

1)         Where can I find documentation on this part of DNN? (Editing Profile Property Definitions)

2)         I would like to know what the “Data Types” are? (Descriptions of what they are)

3)         Can we search members using the new profiles? (ie All who selected “true” to this question)

4)         I will need to make sure some are required. If I click required, it still does not show up in the member-registration, am I doing something wrong?

5)         Maybe a ComboBox Option?

It is pretty easy to add new profile properties but resist the urge to delete stock properties you do not want, instead make them not visible.  Some modules expect the standard properties to exist (I read some posts that suggested this).

1 and 2.  The easiest way to learn about them is to create a few in a sandbox and try them out.  You can always delete them after.
3.  Some 3rd party modules can search these custom properties (UserListing on SnowCovered) but the included User Accounts does not.
4.  In the User Accounts - User Settings you can choose to enforce valid profile when registering.  This will make your new fields visible and make users fill them in.

Wow - thank you for the info!

I assume by "Sandbox" you mean play with it, before I make it live?

Thanks for the info on deleting original ones, and the "UserListing"

I found the enforcing on the settings, can't believe I missed that - but if you don't mind, a few more Q's :-)

1) How do I fill in the "List Options" It is a combo box, but I can't find where to fill in the options.
2) How do I do the "Validation"? Is there a list somewhere that shows the different ones I can use? (Like an Phone Number)
3) do you know what "CAPTCHA" is?

Yes - by sandbox I mean create a child portal and play around with the profile there before moving to a portal you care about.
  1. Choose the list type when populating your property with values from a list you've created in Host Settings - Lists.  Names must match exactly.
  2. Create a regular expression for validation; there is a textbox for the regex when editing the profile property.  Try regexplib.com for help.
  3. A CAPTCHA is the blurry/fuzzy/non-machine readable word you need to type in sometimes when registering on a website to prevent spammers.
One other thing - name all your properties without spaces.  Spacing will wreak havoc in the rendered javascript.  Use the resource files to create display names, help text, validation text, etc...

I cannot get a List type record to work at all. I tried adding a list in Host - Lists, as you mentioned, and calling it from Manage Profile Properties but it still won't work. The drop-down menu of the list continues to stay blank.

I'm running DNN v. 04.03.05

 Any other suggestions?
