1st of all I tried to upgrade two days ago. I followed the directions setforth in the install guide for upgrading. This didn't work at all which was very disappointing mainly because I thought the new features were going to be great.

Well anyway, I did a full backup of ALL the files so when the install didn't work I reverted back to those files. Well it got 99% of the way through copying the files back and it stopped suddenly because it said I didn't have "permission" to move or copy a specific file.

So I had to got to CrystalTechs website and PAY $10 for files I already had that were on a backup to get them to my main directory. Now the site still doesn't work. What is the point of doing a backup, then paying for one, when it doesn't even work????? I get a message that says " A critical error has occured. Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when I try to log in as host, admin, or any other login member. Furthermore, I can't even register a new account as I thought that might be a problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I would really have liked to upgraded but I guess I'm going to be luck if my older version even works?!?

There are several factors here and only some of them are related to DNN. The host for your site is every bit as important as the framework you choose. I'm not saying crystal tech is bad, what I am saying is that I can't imagine hosting DNN in an environment that does not give me complete access to files, IIS and the DB. There are any number of things that can go wrong during the upgrade process, and if you can't see the real error message they are difficult to fix.

Did you restore your DB, or are you reloading the old files over the new files and still connecting to the same DB?

I would also suggest that when upgrading you create a new site and new db. If you do that, if the upgrade fails it's very easy to roll back to the previous version.

I can understand what you are saying about access, but I do have full access, it's just the files were not copying as if another file was preventig it from doing so.

As far as the DB, yeah that makes sense now, but it wasn't in the upgrade instructions. I made all the changes over top of the same DB I guess mainloy because I didn't know any better. I did get some error messages when I initially did the install where there were two errors that occured. I looked through the forums for a fix, called tech support and they advised I got back to my originial version, but that didn't work at all. I'm sure there are things that are bound to go wrong during an install/upgrade, because you can see all the post with problems people have but what now? Is there anyway to rever the DB? CrystalTech allows me to get full control of everything and I can look at the DB "connections" and it actually shows the upgrade I tried to do the other day, should I delete that? I'm just not sure what to do now... and wish I could upgrade to the newest 3.3.5 version but it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to do anything but totally start over again. Thanks for your post...

Michael,

if you need to revert to an earlier state, you need to restore files and database. If you have troubles upgrading DNN check carefully the update instructions, especially regarding modifying web.config. If you use 3rd party modules, check for upgrades in advance to the core upgrade. If you get concrete errors, post here with the necessary details for assistance.

In reference to a post a few back, can you supply a list of hosters that allow full access to IIS? I would love to sign-up!
