Rodney, when was the last time you used the store module? Of all the ones you point out, you should definitely take a look at the large amount of changes that have happened in that module, there was a release as recent as a few months ago I believe.

It was about 2 years ago - good point  (sorry, strike that comment from the record then - I have not been keeping an eye on it ;)  (my point remains tho that there are some modules that should be pruned IMHO)

Actually, this is what I think would be a good idea - all the modules are removed from the core website (no core branding etc. giving the impression to noobs and developers that the DNN Corp endorse/sponsor/developer/whatever any modules.

Then project teams apply to rejoin as official DNN modules - the only thing is though that they have to commit to some sort of standard with regards to response time or release cycles, even if it is only once a year - the point is that there must be SOME standard in place to be listed on this site. This will get rid of dead projects and not confuse people that they actually are being worked on.

These dead projects can be put on codeplex or the forge and whoever wants to work on them can...   (it's the fact that they on this site that confuses a lot of people - back to the Maps module example - you can go to that forum now and see my posts over the course of 2 years and how I eventually got so frustrated with no reply I left and bought one - how many other people do this).

I 'purchased' a third party map module and one year after, the module is not delivered to me yet... I only used text module and form and list core modules. All others are third party modules. The point is, every modules has its life cycles. Even you bought an Apple. You still can drive an 80's Civic but if you drive 2010 Civic don't expect will not have brake issue. I actually like the way the core team does now, focus on the DNN core when you have very limited resource to spend rather than those hopeless core modules which can be easily replaced by cheap third party modules.

Thanks,
George

Chirs, once again, thank you for your knowledge, I couldn't ask for a better response.

I have a couple of items that I have been working with.

For one, I am still using the Annoucements module as a kind of .PLAN update, and for some reason, which I am not too happy with, the RSS module seems to be working now, at least in some form.  This might be, as you said, due to the search indexing of the core system which is tied to the RSS updates.  Even if that is so, I am not sure I really care for a intermittent solution.  Some where with in this form I saw a post that gave instructions on how to clear some tables with the SQL core tool, and I think that might have been what was causing the system to not update at all.

I also spent a few hours trying to play around with the form and list module, which I am not going to go in to depth here about.  I will keep that to the modules forum.  Though I might come back here and post updates if they are related to my main issue.

You gave me some great insight on how DNN is structured.  I was under the impression that all the team projects / DNN modules were part of the core rather than true modules themselves.  So, modifying the Annoucements module may still be an option.

Rodney seems to know my pain.

I was thinking at the begining of the weekend of a way to explain my frustration, and if you haven't seen Monty Python, you should google "monty python dead parrot video".

The main problem I have with the annoucement module is that it doesn't seem to serve any real world purpose.  So why is it there?  I think in a later post Rodney nails it again by saying some modules should probably just be pulled.  I am not sure I agree with him all the way on his developer module structure, but if a module doesn't do anything of real value, then having it there is just letting people go down the wrong path.  And that leads to frustration.
