leela-

While configuration of the Repository module is certainly a far cry from the simplicity of the Documents module, Repository is still the most appropriate module for your stated task.  Since Repository items are skinnable (allowing you to include, exclude and position/arrange whatever elements you like) you can set up a list of Repository items to look very much like a list of Documents items while also including an appropraite filetype icon.  Plus you'll gain access to all the other nice Repository features like document revisioning, moderated user uploads, items ratings, etc.  Certainly more work up front compared to just dropping a Documents module on a page, but also a much bigger payoff IMO.

(Now, with that said, I'll confess that initially figuring out Repository was a pain in the rear for me...but eventually well worth the effort.)

Okay... gonna give it a try... I guess if I'm willing to customize the Documents module, then I guess I can do the same for the Repository module... thanks for the advice.... *leela*

If you really need to deal with documents, I suggest to look at advanced 3rd party modules like Open Document from www.xepient.com

Oddly, ODL is not listed on Xepient's website.  It's still in the Marketplace and on Snowcovered and had a recent version update:

Also, if you're considering purchasing third-party document managers, I'd recommend a look at Document Exchange (DMX5).  The recently-released ODL version 4.1 appears to bring it up to par with the features previously available in DMX version 5.  ODL wins on price at $175 compared to DMX price of $199.  I've used DMX3 and DMX5 and both were very stable (though DMX5 does have one or two quirks).  I've no experience with the new ODL so I can't offer any personal insights on its use.
