I cannot get the documents module to load correctly on DNN 7.1.1.  Here is the error I receive when it is added to a page:

Error: Documents is currently unavailable. DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider' threw an exception. ---> System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider' threw an exception. ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) at System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type) at DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String ObjectProviderType, String ObjectProviderName, String ObjectNamespace, String ObjectAssemblyName, Boolean UseCache, Boolean fixAssemblyName) at DotNetNuke.Framework.Reflection.CreateObject(String ObjectProviderType, String ObjectNamespace, String ObjectAssemblyName) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider.CreateProvider() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider..cctor() --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DocumentController.GetDocumentsSettings(Int32 ModuleId) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.Document.LoadSettings() at DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.Document.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

 The event viewer shows this:

InnerException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider' threw an exception.
ModuleControlSource: DesktopModules/Documents/Document.ascx
Method: System.Activator.CreateInstance
Message: DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider' threw an exception. ---> System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.DataProvider' threw an exception. ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. I have done the following:

  1. Installed latest Documents module version (6.1) without uninstalling the old one.  This did not work
  2. Uninstalled documents module after deleting all references of it on pages, then installed latest
  3. After this didn't work, I uninstalled it again, restarted the application, went and deleted a DesktopModules/Documents folder that must have been left behind.
  4. Installed latest again after these deletes.  Still didn't work.

Any idea on what needs to be done to get this working correctly?

make sure, there is no table documents in the database
install documents module again

Sebastian,

I had done that during my previous action steps, but decided to go ahead and try again. In doing so, I found another file in the bin named "DotNetNuke.Modules.Documents.SqlDataProvider.dll" from 2007. That was the one I had been missing. Once removed, everything worked correctly!

Thanks for your input and helping me discover the fix. I appreciate your time.

Jarrod,

I am going to make sure the next release of the documents module includes a cleanup task to remove that DLL. It was in previous releases, but apparently didn't work as designed! Sorry for the troubles
