Will,

Dang, I really, really, really dislike the answer to number 1.  This adds a lot of effort to the process when going through and doing regular editing or build out of a site, not to mention when we have custom developed items that need people to be in edit mode to administer etc.

I really believe that giving the user an option to "Stay in Edit" is something that really needs to be maintained.  I know it sounds like little effort to mouse over, then click, then do your edit.  But when you do that 50-100 times in a day it adds up very quickly.

I definitely agree that a "sticky" concept would be good. In practice I tend to stay in "edit" mode 90% of the time and only switch to "view" mode to check how my work will look.
