AFAIK the only module supporting core messaging feature, which has been added in DNN 5.3.0, is core messaging atm. There are still known issues with this new features, but the module should be present, because gets installed on upgrades automatically, did you check folder /install/module, for the module package still residing inside?

I too did not have the messaging module upon install and I tried two fresh installations with two different downloads of the install package.... nor would the profile page work so I would not have seen if the messaging functionality work. Nevertheless, the messaging module was not installed.

I just took a look in the folder that you suggested and the module is a "Messaging_01.00.00._Install.zip" file. It's funny as I didn't see the Taxonomy module installed in modules or a selection to install the module in the available extensions to install page. The Taxonomy file also is a zip file. I’m not sure of the community module with also seems to be a zip file.
I really wanted to use the messaging functionality in the 5.3 build but had to get the project going and really have to have accessibility to the profile page. So, I installed 5.2.3 of that I have read seems to be a stable build that works well.
