Here's another piece of the puzzle.  If I put  <!--   before the <object> and  -->  after the </object>, so that the entire object tag is commented out, DNN still can't parse the html.  That is, I still get the same error about the array bounds.  I have to actually delete everything  from <object> to </object> before the parse will go through.    So DNN is apparently going inside the comments and finding something there it chokes on.

I read Shaun Walker's paper from May 7, 2008 that you linked to.  It does say object tags can be used in skin html files, but  for the use of specifying TOKEN variables inline so that an XML file is not necessary.   By specifying codetype="dotnetnuke/server"  the object tag is converted from a client-side control to a server-side control.  I'm certainly not specifying codetype="dotnetnuke/server"  but it seems that the parser is definitely trying to do something with this object tag - and failing.

unfortunately it has been reported before that the parser does not properly recognize comments, but should be able to skip other objects. One option for you is removing your object, compile the script and add the object directly into the resulting ascx control. If this works without a JS error, please log the parser bug into the DNN issue tracker at support.dotnetnuke.com. Thank you!
