Hi,

I downloaded the comunity edition of DNN 5 installer and went through the steps provided with SQL server Express type of installation. I am using Windows 2003 server enterprise edition sp2.

Me and my friend are building modules and trying to bring up a e-com site. We have the basic DNN site running and also some pages and controls from two modules.
The intermittent problem I am facing is that, suddenly for some reason, the site when accessed shows the 'DNN Install page' !!?
I do not know what is causing this and if it is because of something incorrect in my installation.
I am afraid to re-install DNN and hence lose all my work.

The strange part is how I fix it,
I delete the DNN virtual directory in IIS and then delete the DNN folder from the \inetpub\...
Then I restore the DNN folder from a backup taken just before the delete and re-create the virtual directory.
and it starts working again ?

1. What is causing this?
2. How can I correct this ?

Please help.

most likely, there is a performance issue with your database. please check up your database, see my blog post here: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2903/DotNetNuke-Database-Performance-Tips.aspx

When dnn is unable to access your database - it assumes that it is a new install - and begins the installation process.

You can prevent this happening by making a couple of changes in your web.config
Look for these to keys and change them both to false instead of true

<add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true" />
        <add key="UseInstallWizard" value="true" />

This will turn off the install wizard and the autoupgrade feature.

It wont however deal with the real issue is that your sql server has some performance issues.
At a guess it could be because of paging issues caused by insufficient memory.

Also if you have AVG installed it can also lead to serious performance issues.

Thanks Leupold and Wes,

I will try the performance tips provided.
What I am still unsure of is, how is the db performance issue affecting the website switching to the 'Install Page'  ?
I mean, what is driving DNN to think that it is not installed ?

secondly,
if this is indeed a DB performance issue, Isn't this an incorrect design ?
Instead of showing the user a slow website, we show them a "website not available" or a "Install page" (if not configured).
Isn't some functionality better than no functionality ?
Some sites cannot afford even a hour's downtime. DB perf issue might surface due to many reasons, even though there are many checks for it.
Maybe even a network latency might look like a DB perf issue ?
What is the best way to remove this whole feature from DNN ?

Thanks
Vijay

Vijay, default settings are for easy install, but for most stable use, I suggest web.config changes mentioned by Westa before.
